The Science of Appetite

The Brain Event
The body either feels full or it feels hungry. In trying to have a healthy waist size, do not let Team Hungry win the game!

Team Hunger

Team Members: C.A.R.T./Leptin
(found in fat cells)
C.A.R.T. is a brain chemical
Leptin is a hormone

Team Members: NPY – brain chemical
Ghrelin – Hormone in the stomach

Team Healthy’s Job: Tell the body to stop eating when it is full. It decreases appetite and increases metabolism.

Team Hungry’s Job: Tell your body it is hungry by secreting Ghrelin into the stomach every 30minutes

Foods that help the body play defense: Nuts, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, oatmeal

Foods that help the body play offense (eat, eat, and eat): Candy, potato chips, soda, white bread, high fructose corn syrup

C.A.R.T. – Named for Cocaine Amphetamine, stimulates the surrounding hypothalamus (in the brain) to increase metabolism and reduce appetite.

Food with fructose or any “ose” (found in low-fat foods) makes the body hungry and unable to shut down the appetitie.

Increasing exercise (30 minutes a day) increases the ability to recognize leptin in the body.

New York City subways frequently experience delays from people on “crash” diets passing out.

As the body gets older, it has fewer leptin receptors in the hypothalamus
Testosterone increases NPY secretion
Fat cells do not increase in number only in size. This is the only cell that has no limit to its size.
