The Shingles - Stroke Connection

Shingles is a condition where there is the re-activation of the varicella (chicken pox) virus and it can become a recurring illness. Typically you develop a painful rash along your nerve pathways – the rash will often appear in "line formations." Pain can precede the rash evolution and shingles typically occurs in someone who is older. Stress and a weakened immune system are other risk factors. Anti-viral medications can reduce the duration of the illness.

Well a new study suggests that shingles can also be a strong risk factor for a stroke. So if you or someone in your family develops shingles, talk to your doctor about lifestyle habits that can help to reduce your risk of stroke. Some things you can do:

  • Exercise
  • Eat a healthy, low sodium diet (Avoid canned foods, frozen food, deli meats, pizza, prepared pasta dishes, yeast breads)
  • Monitor your blood pressure
  • Don’t smoke
  • Do lose weight if necessary
  • Take blood pressure medications if you do have high blood pressure
