Kids Are Abusing Your Drugs

Illegal drug use has climbed to 20 million Americans, according to one report. Some facts you should know:

Drug abuse often starts early – the average age these days is 12-13.
The drugs used today are often prescription drugs found in the home – drugs that parents are keeping in easily accessible medicine cabinets
Abusing prescription drugs is sometimes more dangerous than abusing illicit drugs – one example is Oxycontin, a controlled pain medication that is supposed to be used in its timed-release form. Kids who get access to it can crush it and get the full dose immediately – a dangerous and often fatal outcome can result.
The drug abuse problem is prevalent among all socio-economic groups
Teen drinkers are twice as likely to become adult alcoholics.
