Have You Heard About This New Concept of Running Barefoot?
A couple of evolutionary biologists have presented their findings which seem to conclude that long-distance running has been around for 2 million years and most of that time running was done barefoot, with spread toes, bended ankles and knees absorbing the shock of impact. These researchers believe that the current generations of running shoes with very squishy soles, fat heels and stiff arch supports are actually causing sports injuries.
They further postulate that if you run barefoot on hard surfaces, the more lightly you will land and the easier you will spring back. That translates to less injuries. There are now scores of barefoot runners and even “barefoot runner coaches” to help you make the switch to this type of running. The trick, they say is to remember 3 things when beginning to run barefoot –
Be light
Be quick
Be upright
Also remember to make sure the surface is free of any dangers to your skin like rocks and pebbles, sharp objects or debris. Remember that this is one theory and not solid science yet.
