Fish Oil Capsules as a New Year's Resolution

If you are not a fish eater or if you only eat fish a couple of times a week, then taking fish oil capsules is a great commitment as one of your New Year’s Health Resolution. What should you know about fish oil capsules?

  • Most fish oil is about 30% EPA and DHA – so if the bottle says “1,000 mgs. of fish oil” on the label, then it may only contain 300 mgs. of EPA and DHA. So specifically look at the breakdown label on the back of the bottle for precise levels.
  • See how many pills you need to take in order to get the advertised amount of fish oil – sometimes it is 2 or 3 capsules.
  • Ignore other omega listings – you probably don’t need more (ALA or omega-6)
  • Major brands are typically mercury-free since they use menhaden fish which are very small and low on the food chain.
  • There currently is no vegetarian source of EPA.

Have a Happy New Year!! More health resolutions to come in 2010!!
