The Concept of Integrative or Blended Medicine

The concept of integrative or blended medicine is gaining in popularity, because it allows you to have a treatment plan that combines traditional medicine with complementary options. Here are some conditions that may lend themselves to this blended approach:

Uncontrolled high cholesterol- Statins are prescription medications that can lower total cholesterol and LDL, and reduce a person’s risk of a heart attack. Adding plant stanols and sterols, which can be found in certain butter substitutes, can help to enhance the process and possibly allow lower doses of statins. Fish oil capsules can also help to lower triglyceride levels, another risk factor for heart disease.

Unrelenting back pain – The conventional approach typically involves initial rest followed by stretching, anti-inflammatory pain medications (NSAIDs), and sometimes surgery for a situation like a herniated disc. Acupuncture (it should remain ongoing if it does provide relief) and/or an herb called Devil’s claw has been shown to help some patients. If arthritis is causing a component of the pain, adding hot/cold therapy and glucosamine/chondroitin can also help some patients.
